You are probably familiar with the classic poem, “Hey Diddle Diddle , the cat and the fiddle, the cow jumped over the moon…” Yeah, you know the one! Well, have you ever wondered what really happened and what these characters have to do with each other?
Well, Mocha and the Moon presents one possible explanation.
It’s all about a cow named Mocha who has an insatiable curiosity about the world around her – a curiosity that goes beyond her little farm until her “wonderings” are literally out of this world!

A few years ago, I was writing in my journal before bed and I was getting bored with what I was writing. I was sounding like a broken record, rehashing the same things day after day.
So I thought I would switch it up.
I decided to add a new concept to my writing called What if? I was going to think of a way the world could be different – like what if the sky was a different colour – and look at all of the possible consequences of that change. Sounded like an interesting enough exercise.
My first entry went like this – What if cows really could jump over the moon? I must have been thinking about the “Hey diddle diddle” at the time, for some reason. And then I thought – would they be aware enough to try? Even if cows could jump, would they ever bother trying to do it?
Then, inspired by the poem, I started writing this story about a dairy cow named Mocha. She was young, enthusiastic and curious to the point of annoying those around her. After a visitor stops by the farm on his way to the next town, Mocha discovers her dream – to go to the moon. But how is she going to make the trip?
And thus Mocha and the Moon was born!
After writing the story, I started getting ideas for songs popping into my head and I knew it had to become musical.
I love these characters! Mocha’s enthusiasm and determination are truly infections. And I will say, it was a total hoot getting in touch with her barn mates, Blanche and Moomoo. Their sarcasm and witty banter always make me laugh!
But more than that, my hope is that young people will leave the show curious and inspired. I want them to see their world in a new way and be ready to go out and make their dreams come true, however big those dreams may be.

Ensemble playing townsfolk, birds, reporters and plane travelers. Characters such as The Man in the Moon, The Vegan, The Stage Manager and Farmer Dan, Marie, Kenny and Molly and his family may easily be taken from this group as they only appear in one scene.
